The Village Attribute System

The Village Attribute System

Colossus consists of many interconnected mechanics, from families and workplaces to migration and social cohesion. One of the major challenges we face is making sure these systems do not exist in isolation. Their connections need to make sense within the world of Colossus while also creating interesting gameplay decisions.

Today, we want to take a closer look at our Village Attributes:

  • Prestige
  • Faith
  • Knowledge
  • Education / Literacy
  • Social Cohesion
  • Migration Attraction

These attributes connect individual villagers, workplaces, buildings, and the village as a whole. While we are still refining the system, there are three fundamental ideas behind its current design.

1. The villager is the beginning

Most Village Attributes originate from the villagers themselves. Social Cohesion, Faith, and Knowledge are generated through their activities, while buildings and workplaces mainly provide ways to increase their output.

A church, for example, does not generate Faith simply by existing. Instead, it enables villagers to practise their religion and generate Faith more effectively.

The main exception is Prestige, which is primarily tied to buildings and represents the outward status of the village.

2. Independent attributes

Village Attributes are deliberately independent from one another. A highly religious village does not automatically have strong Social Cohesion, nor does a knowledgeable population necessarily make a village prestigious.

Players therefore have to decide which attributes to prioritise, allowing villages to develop in different directions.

3. Migration attraction drives growth

While villages can naturally grow through families, Migration Attraction is currently one of the main drivers of growth.

Migration Attraction is influenced by Prestige, Social Cohesion, and Faith, but each attracts different groups. Prestige appeals more to the upper classes, Social Cohesion to the lower strata, and Faith to members of the clergy.

As these values increase, so does the chance of new migrants arriving. This makes Migration Attraction an important link between how you develop your village and how it grows.

With this system, we want Village Attributes to connect different parts of Colossus rather than function as isolated resources. How your villagers live and how you develop your settlement ultimately shape what your village can become.
