The Role of Faith in Colossus
One of the core goals during the development of Colossus has always been to ensure that every gameplay system has a clear purpose. As the village simulation evolved, our original church system no longer fit that philosophy. It mixed together several different mechanics, making progression less intuitive than we wanted.
With our latest redesign, Faith has become its own interconnected gameplay system, linking villagers' needs, free-time activities, social development, and long-term progression.
Previously, villagers had a dedicated Church Need. While functional, it felt overly restrictive. After all, people do not seek a building, they seek spiritual fulfillment. The system has therefore been redesigned around a new Faith Need.
This need can now be fulfilled by constructing either a simple Shrine or a Church, and importantly, neither building requires a priest to satisfy this basic need. Even a small settlement can provide its inhabitants with a place of worship, allowing Faith to become part of village life long before the clergy arrives.
The first Priest
Religious life evolves alongside the settlement. Once the village reaches the rank of Small Village, a Priest will automatically migrate to the settlement. With a staffed church, an entirely new layer of gameplay becomes available.
Villagers can now choose to attend Mass during their free time. Unlike simply fulfilling a basic need, attending Mass is a genuine social activity. It allows villagers to spend their leisure time together while strengthening both the community and its spiritual life. Every visit to Mass contributes to:
- Social Cohesion, as villagers gather and interact.
- Faith, representing the collective devotion of the village.
This creates a natural connection between personal well-being and the development of the community as a whole.
Faith as a Village Resource
Faith is now a dedicated village resource that reflects the collective spiritual strength of your settlement. Rather than existing solely as a statistic, Faith becomes an important part of long-term progression.
The Church is the primary source of Faith generation, but it is not the only one. As the village grows, additional buildings and upgrades can contribute to the villagers' religious life. For example, a Theatre upgraded with Religious Plays can inspire devotion while simultaneously providing entertainment.
Faith can then be invested to expand the influence of the Church through increasingly powerful upgrades.
The Church
The Church is no longer just another amenity building. Instead, it becomes one of the village's most flexible progression buildings. Depending on the upgrades you choose, the Church can focus on different aspects of your settlement:
- strengthening Faith generation,
- increasing Social Cohesion,
- producing Prestige,
- or contributing to Education.
This allows every village to develop a distinct religious identity depending on the player's priorities.
A New Path to Victory
Faith is more than a resource, it is also one of the ways your village can achieve greatness. By accumulating enough Faith and fully developing the Church through its highest upgrades, players can pursue a dedicated Faith Victory, representing a settlement whose influence is built not on wealth or military power, but on the unwavering devotion of its people.
We believe this redesign creates a much more natural progression for religious life in Colossus. Faith now begins with a humble shrine, grows through the shared experiences of your villagers, and ultimately has the potential to shape the destiny of an entire settlement.
