A Deeper Look at Building Upgrades in Colossus

In a previous post, we explored how buildings in our game are constructed step by step, bringing them to life through smooth animation sequences (see: Artstyle Overhaul).

But what happens after a building is finished?
That’s where building upgrades come into play.
Upgrades are enhancements or replacements that reflect technological progress, economic changes, or evolving needs. These can be visual improvements like adding a fence or a proper roof, but they can also introduce new functionality—like expanding storage or increasing workplace capacity.
Each building type has its own unique upgrade tree. For instance, a Wood Logger Camp will evolve very differently from a Blacksmith's Forge. Some upgrades unlock others, forming a strategic progression path. Let’s take a closer look at how the Wood Logger Camp upgrades work.
🌲Wood Logger Camp Upgrades – A Closer Look
Starting from a simple logging area, the Wood Logger Camp can be transformed through a series of functional and visual improvements:

Base Camp
A rudimentary setup with a few logs and tools. This is the starting point for your wood gathering operations.
🔁 Tier 1 Upgrades
➤ Expand Log Deposit
Adds a larger area for storing freshly cut logs. This is ideal if your camp is harvesting a lot of wood quickly and needs buffer storage.
➤ Expand Workplace
Increases the number of active workers. This is particularly useful in times of high unemployment—more villagers can be assigned, boosting wood output.
➤ Tent
Offers basic shelter to the workers, improving their efficiency and representing an early step toward worker well-being.
➤ Storage Hut
Adds a covered storage space to protect logs from decay. It’s both a visual and practical upgrade that reflects settlement progress.
🔁 Tier 2 Upgrades
Once earlier upgrades are in place, more advanced options unlock:
➤ Second Workplace
Doubles the workspace, allowing even more villagers to be employed at the camp. Excellent for scaling production.
➤ Log Roof
Aesthetic and functional, the roof protects tools and logs from weather, symbolizing a move toward permanence.
➤ Storage Roof
An upgrade to the storage hut, offering better protection and structural integrity.
🧠 Decision-Making: Who Picks the Upgrades?
The building’s owner makes upgrade decisions based on:
- ✅ Which upgrades are available
- 🔓 Which ones are unlocked
- 💰 Which are affordable
- 📉 The current economic situation
Each upgrade isn’t just cosmetic—it reflects a story of progress, efficiency, and adaptation. The Wood Logger Camp is just one example of how our buildings grow along with your village.
